A person arrested on Friday night is not reading ten blog posts. They open ChatGPT and type "best criminal defense lawyer in San Diego". They get three or four names and a sentence about each. That is the whole shortlist.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) for law firms is the work of getting your firm into that answer, with your name spelled right and your practice areas described the way you would describe them. Golden Seller has run search marketing for personal injury, criminal defense, estate planning, litigation and business law firms in San Diego since 2013. This page explains how GEO works for a firm and what we measure.

GEO for law firms is the practice of making a firm easy for AI assistants to understand, cite and recommend. The assistants in question are Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. The inputs are your website, your Google Business Profile, legal directories, review sites and any press or association pages that mention you.
Legal search has two kinds of questions. Informational: "can police search my car without a warrant in California". Commercial: "who is the best DUI lawyer in San Diego". Assistants answer both, and a firm that is cited on the first kind is more likely to be named on the second. Most law firm GEO programs only chase the second. We work on both.
Legal clients research before they call, and they are anxious when they do it. An assistant that answers in plain language, with a short list of firms, is exactly what they want. Google's own AI features guide says these answers are built from Google's normal ranking systems, so a firm that already ranks has a head start. A firm that does not has almost no way in.
Two things make legal different. First, the ethics rules. What an assistant repeats about your firm is drawn from what you and others have published, so an outcome claim without a disclaimer on your site can be repeated without it. Second, directories. Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Super Lawyers and the State Bar's own profiles are read by AI assistants. A firm whose directory profiles disagree with its website gets hedged answers or none.
We write a prompt set of 20 to 40 real questions for your practice areas and your city, run them across the major assistants several times each, and record who is named, which pages are cited and what is wrong. Wrong practice areas, a former partner's name, a closed office and a misquoted phone number all show up in this step. That report is yours whether or not you hire us.
We line up your name, address, phone, hours and practice areas across your site, Google Business Profile and every legal directory. We add Attorney, LegalService and LocalBusiness schema. Each attorney gets a profile page with bar number, admissions, education and a photo, because an assistant that cannot verify who you are will not recommend you.
Most law firm pages open with a paragraph about the firm's dedication. Assistants skip those. We rewrite practice pages so each section answers what a prospect asks: what the charge means, what happens at arraignment, what a case like this costs, how long it takes, what to do in the next 24 hours. Answers are stated in the first two sentences of each section, with a source where the law is cited.
We publish short, direct answers to the legal questions people in your area ask AI assistants, written or reviewed by an attorney at your firm and signed with their name. These pages earn citations on informational queries, which builds the authority that gets the firm named on "who should I hire" queries.
We complete and correct the legal directory profiles assistants read, work on review volume and recency on Google and Avvo, and go after local press, bar association pages and "best of" roundups where competitors appear and you do not. First Page Sage publishes a list of top law firm GEO agencies. Lists like that are exactly what assistants quote when asked for a recommendation.
Before anything ships we check it against California's attorney advertising rules: no misleading outcome claims, no unearned specialist language, required disclaimers present. We would rather lose a citation than earn you a bar complaint.
Every month we rerun the prompt set and report your mention rate, citation rate, competitor share and accuracy errors, alongside AI referral visits and leads in GA4 and your call tracking. AI answers vary between runs, so we report rates across repeated runs, not single results.
We already market law firms. Our San Diego clients include personal injury, criminal defense, estate planning, construction litigation and business law practices, and we run their Google Ads and SEO as well. That matters here, because we can see what happens to a firm's branded searches, ad costs and call volume when AI assistants start naming it. A GEO-only vendor cannot.

GEO for law firms is the practice of making a firm easy for AI assistants to understand, cite and recommend when someone asks a legal question or asks who to hire. It covers the firm's business facts, attorney credentials, service pages, reviews and third-party mentions, plus monthly measurement of how often the firm is named.
Usually yes, and small firms have an advantage. AI assistants answer local, specific questions, and a two-attorney criminal defense firm in San Diego can be the clearest answer to a San Diego criminal defense question. Big national firms are spread too thin to own every local query.
No. AI assistants pull heavily from pages that already rank and from directories and review sites. A firm with weak SEO has little for the assistant to find. GEO adds a layer on top of working SEO.
No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. AI answers change from run to run. What we guarantee is that you see your mention rate, your competitors' mention rate and your AI-sourced leads every month.
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode reach the most people, because they sit on top of normal Google searches. ChatGPT is the largest standalone assistant. Perplexity matters for people doing deeper research. We track all of them, and we tell you which one your prospects are actually arriving from.
The same advertising rules apply to what an AI repeats about you as to what you publish. We do not publish outcome claims without the required disclaimers, we do not use specialist language for attorneys who are not certified specialists, and we flag anything on your site that could be repeated by an assistant in a way the State Bar would not like.
Fixing conflicting business facts and opening crawler access can change some answers within weeks. Earning citations on legal directories and local press takes longer. We report monthly. Most firms know within a quarter whether the mention rate is moving.
Yes. The method is the same anywhere. Our office is in San Diego and most of our legal clients are in Southern California.
