Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business into that answer. Golden Seller has run SEO and paid search for San Diego businesses since 2013. Our GEO service applies the same discipline to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Then we measure the result every month and show you the numbers.

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making a business easy for AI assistants to understand and cite when they answer a question. Traditional SEO aims for a ranked link. GEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself.
The two overlap more than most agencies admit. AI assistants pull from pages that already rank, from business listings, from reviews and from articles that compare providers. If none of those sources describe you clearly, the assistant has nothing to repeat. Google says as much in its own guidance: its AI features are built on the same ranking systems as regular search, and no special markup is required to appear in them.
A results page shows ten links, a map pack and a few ads. An AI answer usually names a handful of businesses and stops. There is less room, and the shortlist gets built before anyone visits a website.
Those shortlists lean on third parties. When we checked Google for "San Diego SEO company" in September 2026, Clutch and Semrush's agency directory sat on the first page next to the agencies themselves. For "top AI marketing companies San Diego" the first page was mostly roundup articles. The same lists feed AI assistants. If your competitors are on them and you are not, the assistant has already made its choice.
We write out the questions your customers actually ask, such as "who is the best orthodontist near Montebello" or "how much does a roof replacement cost in San Diego". We run them across the major assistants, several times each, and record who gets named and which pages get cited. We also note anything the assistant gets wrong about you. That becomes the benchmark every later report is measured against.
Assistants hedge when your name, address, hours or services differ between your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp and industry directories. We find the conflicts and fix them. Then we add Organization, LocalBusiness and service schema so the facts on your own site are machine-readable.
AI answers lift short, self-contained passages. We restructure service pages so each one answers the buyer's real questions directly: what it costs, how long it takes, who it suits, what happens first. Claims get a source or get cut. An assistant can repeat a specific fact. It has no reason to repeat a slogan.
We work on the off-site sources assistants lean on: directory profiles, review platforms, local press, industry associations and "best of" roundups. This overlaps with link building, with one difference. For GEO, a mention without a link can still count, because the assistant reads the text.
Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. Content that only appears after scripts load, such as animated counters, tabs and some page-builder sections, is invisible to them. We check your robots.txt rules for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, and we check your server-rendered HTML so nothing you want quoted is hidden.
This gets its own section below, because it is where most GEO offers go vague.
No one can guarantee that an AI assistant will name a business. Anyone promising a specific position inside ChatGPT is guessing. What we can do is measure the work properly and show you whether it is moving.
| What we track | Where the data comes from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate: the share of your prompt set where you are named | Monthly prompt runs | The core visibility number |
| Citation rate: the share where your website is linked as a source | Monthly prompt runs | Shows the assistant is reading your pages |
| Competitor share: who gets named instead of you | Monthly prompt runs | Tells us who to catch and where |
| Accuracy: errors in what AI says about you | Monthly prompt runs | Wrong hours or services cost you calls |
| AI referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com | GA4 | Shows real visits, beyond visibility |
| Leads from AI referral visits | GA4 and call tracking where installed | The number that pays for the work |
Two caveats go in every report. AI answers change from one run to the next, so we read trends across months and never celebrate a single good result. And Search Console does not report AI Overviews separately, so part of Google's AI traffic sits inside your normal search numbers.
Assistants refresh their sources at different speeds, so results arrive unevenly across platforms.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | A ranked link in Google or Bing | A featured snippet or voice answer | A mention or citation inside an AI answer |
| Where it shows up | Search results pages | Google snippets, voice assistants | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health | Direct answers, structured data | Clear facts, quotable pages, third-party mentions |
| How we measure it | Rankings, organic traffic, leads | Snippet wins | Mention rate, citation rate, AI referral leads |
We run them together. Pages that rank well in Google are more likely to be read by AI assistants, so GEO works best on top of solid SEO. If your foundations need work, that comes first, and we will say so.
GEO pays off fastest for businesses whose customers ask for a recommendation before they buy. That covers most of the industries we already work in: personal injury, criminal defense and estate planning law, orthodontics, home care, roofing, auto and IT services. Law firms have their own page: GEO for law firms.
It is a weaker fit if you sell mainly on price in a commodity category, or if your website and listings still need basic SEO work.
We are a San Diego agency, founded in 2013, with an office at 501 W Broadway. We hold Google Partner status and manage SEO, Google Ads and Meta ads for local businesses. Clients rate us 5.0 across 34 reviews on UpCity.
That mix matters for GEO. Because we run the search and ad accounts too, we can see what happens to branded searches and inbound calls when AI assistants start naming a client. An agency that only does GEO cannot see that.
Generative engine optimization services make a business easier for AI assistants to understand and cite when they answer a question. The work covers business facts, schema, page structure, third-party mentions and technical access for AI crawlers, plus monthly measurement of how often the assistants name you.
No, but they depend on each other. SEO aims for a ranked link on Google. GEO aims for a mention or a citation inside an AI answer. AI assistants pull heavily from pages that already rank, so GEO works best on top of solid SEO.
They overlap. Answer engine optimization usually means winning featured snippets and voice answers in traditional search. GEO covers AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. The tactics are similar and we run them as one program.
It works best for businesses whose customers ask for a recommendation before they buy, such as law firms, orthodontists, home care agencies and contractors. It is a weaker fit for commodity products sold mainly on price, or for sites that still need basic SEO work.
We run a fixed set of your customers' real questions through the major AI assistants every month, several times each. We track how often you are named, how often your site is cited, which competitors appear instead, and whether the answers about you are accurate. In GA4 we track visits and leads that arrive from AI platforms.
It depends on where you start. Fixing conflicting business facts and crawler access can change answers on some platforms within weeks. Earning mentions on third-party sites takes longer. Monthly reporting shows the trend so you are not waiting on a single date.
No. Nobody can. AI answers change from one run to the next and the platforms do not publish how they choose sources. What we guarantee is the measurement: every month you see how often you are named and how many leads arrived from AI platforms.
The main risk is paying for tactics nobody measures. Mass-produced AI content is another, because it can hurt a site's standing with Google and with the AI assistants. We avoid both by tying every change to the monthly prompt test.
