Local SEO San Diego

Be the business Google shows to people near you

When someone in Hillcrest searches "orthodontist near me", Google shows three businesses on a map before it shows anything else. Most of the calls go to those three. The rest of the results share what is left.

Local SEO is the work of getting into that map pack, and into the local results under it, for the neighborhoods you actually serve. Golden Seller has done it for San Diego law firms, dental and orthodontic practices, home care agencies, roofers and auto businesses since 2013. Our office is downtown at 501 W Broadway, so we search the same results your customers see.

What local SEO is

Local SEO is search optimization for a business with a physical location or a service area. The target is the Google map pack, the local organic results, and increasingly the AI Overview that sits above both. Most of the signals live outside the website: the Google Business Profile, review volume and recency, the consistency of your name, address and phone number across directories, and how close you are to the person searching.

That last one is the part you cannot change. Everything else you can.

Why San Diego is a harder local market than it looks

San Diego is not one market. A roofer in Escondido and a roofer in Chula Vista are 40 miles apart and rarely compete for the same search. Google knows this, and it ranks the map pack differently for a searcher in La Jolla than for one in El Cajon. A single "San Diego" page on your site does not cover Poway, Encinitas or National City. Local SEO here means deciding which neighborhoods and cities are worth winning, then earning each one.

The competition is also better than in most cities. When we checked the results for "San Diego SEO company" in September 2026, the first page held three local agencies alongside Clutch, Semrush's agency directory and Built In. Directory pages rank here. That is a lever, and we use it.

What is included

Google Business Profile

This is where most local SEO is won or lost. We set the correct primary and secondary categories, fill every service with a description, add photos with local context, keep hours accurate including holidays, answer the Q&A section before a stranger does, and post updates so the profile looks maintained. We also check for duplicate or suspended profiles, which are more common than owners expect.

Reviews

Volume matters, recency matters more, and responses matter to the people reading them. We build a simple review request routine into how your business already follows up with customers, and we draft owner responses to every review, including the bad ones. We do not buy reviews, gate them or filter unhappy customers away from Google. Google's policies prohibit all three.

Listings that agree with each other

Your name, address, phone number and hours should be identical on your website, Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, the Better Business Bureau and the directories specific to your industry. When they disagree, Google trusts the profile less. We audit, correct and then monitor, because listings drift.

Location and service pages

For each area you want to win, we build a page with something real on it: the services you offer there, work you have done there, the parking situation, the local landmarks customers use for directions. Pages with local detail rank. Pages with the city name swapped in do not, and Google's spam rules name that pattern.

Schema and technical basics

LocalBusiness schema with the same facts as your profile. A working, indexable site with one canonical version. Page speed that does not embarrass you on a phone. These are prerequisites rather than tactics, and we fix them first.

Local links and mentions

Chamber of commerce membership pages, sponsorships, local press, industry associations and neighborhood business directories. These are the links Google reads as evidence you are a real local business, and they are the same sources AI assistants read when they recommend one.

Reporting you can read

Monthly: map-pack position for your target keywords, measured from the neighborhoods you care about rather than from one downtown point; calls, direction requests and website clicks from the Google Business Profile; organic traffic and leads from GA4 and Search Console; reviews gained and average rating. If a number did not move, the report says why and what we are changing.

How we start

  1. Free audit. We check your Google Business Profile, your listings, your reviews and your site, and we rank your map-pack position from five points around your service area. You get the findings in writing.
  2. Fix the profile and the listings. This is usually the fastest visible change.
  3. Start the review routine.
  4. Build or rewrite the location and service pages, most valuable area first.
  5. Local link and mention work, ongoing.
  6. Monthly report and adjustment.

Local SEO and AI answers

AI assistants build their local recommendations from the same inputs: the Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent listings. A business that has done local SEO properly is most of the way to being named in an AI answer. For the rest, see our generative engine optimization services.

Who this is for

Businesses in San Diego County that get customers from a defined area: law firms, dental and orthodontic practices, home care agencies, roofers and contractors, auto services, IT providers and restaurants. If you serve the whole country from a website, you need standard SEO instead, and we will tell you so on the audit call.

Why Golden Seller

We are a San Diego agency, founded in 2013, with an office at 501 W Broadway. Google Partner. We manage SEO, Google Ads and Meta ads for local businesses across San Diego and Los Angeles, so we can see what a map-pack gain does to a client's ad costs and call volume, beyond the ranking itself. Clients rate us 5.0 across 34 reviews on UpCity.

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work of getting a business to appear when someone nearby searches for what it sells. The main targets are the Google map pack, the local results that appear under it, and the AI answers that now sit above both. It relies on the Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business listings and location-specific pages on the website.

How much does local SEO cost in San Diego?

Price depends on how many locations you have, how competitive the category is, and whether the website needs technical work first. We quote after a free audit, not before.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Google Business Profile fixes and review work can move map-pack rankings within a few weeks. Ranking location pages in the organic results below the map takes longer, usually a few months, because it depends on content and links. We report monthly so you see the direction early.

Do I need a separate page for each San Diego neighborhood?

Only where you have something real to say. A page for a neighborhood you serve, with local detail, projects or clients from that area, and a reason to visit it, can rank. Fifty near-identical pages with the neighborhood name swapped in will not, and Google's spam policies name that pattern.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Regular SEO aims at ranking a website for a topic. Local SEO aims at ranking a business for a topic in a place, and most of the signals live outside the website: the Google Business Profile, reviews, directory listings and the physical address. A San Diego plumber does not need to outrank national plumbing brands. It needs to be the plumber Google shows to someone in Clairemont.

Can local SEO help me show up in AI answers?

Yes, and it is the foundation for it. AI assistants pull local recommendations from the same sources local SEO fixes: the Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent listings. Our generative engine optimization service builds on that base.

Do you guarantee a top-three map-pack ranking?

No. Map-pack results change by the searcher's location and Google adjusts them constantly. We guarantee the reporting: every month you see your map-pack positions across the neighborhoods you serve, your calls and direction requests, and your leads.
