GoDaddy Airo Website Builder: The Hidden Costs Business Owners Don’t See

GoDaddy Airo website builder hidden costs

Every week, someone calls our office and says some version of the same thing: “I already built my website with GoDaddy’s AI. It only took a few minutes. Can you just help me get more customers from it?” Others tell me they are about to sign up because the demo looked so easy.

I understand the appeal. GoDaddy Airo promises a finished website in the time it takes to drink a coffee, and for a busy owner that sounds like a gift. But after more than a decade of building websites and running SEO for businesses in San Diego, I have learned that the cheapest website to launch is often the most expensive one to own. This article explains what Airo is, what it does well, and why I usually recommend against it for any business that wants to be found on Google.

What is GoDaddy Airo?

Airo is GoDaddy’s AI assistant for small businesses. GoDaddy launched it in 2024 and has expanded it since. You describe your business in a few sentences and Airo generates a website inside GoDaddy’s Website Builder (formerly called Websites + Marketing), complete with page layouts, headlines, body copy, images, and suggestions for a logo, social posts and email marketing. Newer versions add AI “agents” for things like appointments, marketing campaigns and customer messages.

It is genuinely fast and easy. For a hobby project, a weekend event or a placeholder while you plan a real site, it can be perfectly fine.

One clarification before we go further: in 2026 GoDaddy also introduced Airo for WordPress, which builds sites on WordPress instead of GoDaddy’s own builder. That is a different product with different trade-offs. Everything below is about Airo inside GoDaddy’s proprietary Website Builder, which is what nearly every business owner who calls us is actually using.

Why business owners think it is a good option

The pitch is convincing, and the reasons people choose it make sense on the surface:

  • Speed. A site that looks professional in minutes.
  • Low monthly price. It feels far cheaper than hiring a designer.
  • Everything in one place. Domain, email, hosting and website on one account.
  • AI-written content. No need to write your own pages.

The problem is that none of these benefits have anything to do with whether the website brings in customers. A website is not a business card. It is a sales tool that has to be found, trusted and acted on. That is where the trouble starts.

How Airo websites hold back your SEO

1. You get limited control over the technical foundation

Google ranks pages based on hundreds of signals, and many of them live in parts of the website that GoDaddy’s builder keeps out of reach. When we audit sites built on proprietary builders like this one, we repeatedly run into the same walls: limited control over canonical tags, robots.txt, structured data (schema) and URL structure, and no app store or plugin ecosystem to fill the gaps. Independent reviewers have noted the same, including the lack of bulk meta tag editing and built-in SEO analysis.

On WordPress or another open platform, fixing these is routine work. On a closed builder, some of it is awkward and some of it simply isn’t possible. You can’t fix what the platform won’t let you touch.

2. The AI writes the same website for everyone

Airo produces content from a short prompt. That means a plumber in Chula Vista and a plumber in Phoenix who type similar descriptions get very similar pages: the same structure, the same safe headlines, the same generic promises about “quality service” and “customer satisfaction.”

Google has been clear that it doesn’t penalize content just because AI helped write it. What it rewards is content that is helpful, original and shows real experience, and its spam policies specifically target pages produced at scale mainly to rank rather than to help people (Google Search Central on AI-generated content). Generic, interchangeable copy gives Google no reason to rank you above the hundred other businesses saying the same thing. It also gives AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity nothing specific to quote when someone asks for a recommendation.

3. Thin pages instead of real service pages

To rank for “water heater repair San Diego” or “estate planning attorney Carlsbad,” you usually need a dedicated, in-depth page for that service and that area. Airo sites typically launch with a handful of short pages: home, about, services, contact. Everything you offer gets squeezed onto one page with a few sentences each. Google sees a small site with little depth and very few chances to match what people actually search for.

4. Speed and performance you can’t tune

Page speed and Core Web Vitals affect both rankings and conversions, especially on phones. Some users report slow loading on GoDaddy’s builder, and because you don’t control the code, the hosting configuration or the caching, there is little you can do about it beyond removing content.

5. Tracking and conversion tools are basic

Growing a business online means knowing which calls, forms and bookings came from which channel. Proprietary builders make proper analytics, call tracking, conversion tracking and custom integrations harder than they should be. Without that data, every marketing dollar after the website is a guess.

The hidden costs nobody mentions at sign-up

This is the part most business owners don’t see until much later. The monthly price is small. The real cost shows up in other places.

The cost of customers who never find you

This is the biggest one, and it’s invisible. You can’t see the calls that went to a competitor because your site sat on page three. A website that looks fine but doesn’t rank feels like it’s working, because nothing obviously breaks. Meanwhile the business slowly comes to depend on referrals, ads and luck.

The cost of paying for traffic you should be getting for free

When organic search doesn’t produce leads, owners turn to Google Ads or Facebook Ads to fill the gap. Ads are a great tool, but sending paid traffic to a generic, slow, hard-to-track website wastes a share of every click. You end up renting customers you could have earned.

The cost of leaving

GoDaddy’s Website Builder has no export tool. If you outgrow it, you can’t download your site and move it somewhere else. Migration guides from WordPress experts explain that moving off the builder means manually saving your text and images and rebuilding the site from scratch. Every month you stay, the eventual move gets more expensive, because there is more content to recreate and more search history to protect with redirects.

The cost of fixing it twice

Many owners who come to us have already spent a year or two on an Airo or GoDaddy Website Builder site, sometimes with GoDaddy’s add-on SEO tools on top. Then they pay again to rebuild properly. The “cheap” website ends up being the most expensive option, because you pay for it, then pay to replace it, and lose the time in between.

The cost of your own time

AI makes the first draft fast. It doesn’t make the next three years easy. Owners end up rewriting AI copy, fighting layout limits, and searching help forums for workarounds that a flexible platform would handle in minutes.

How to tell if your current site is holding you back

If you already built with Airo or GoDaddy’s builder, here are a few quick checks:

  • Search Google for your main service plus your city. Does your site appear on the first page?
  • Open Google Search Console. How many clicks did you get last month from people who didn’t type your business name?
  • Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile.
  • Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend a business like yours in your area. Are you mentioned?
  • Count your pages. Do you have a dedicated page for each main service and each area you serve?

If most of those answers are disappointing, the website is likely the bottleneck, not your marketing budget.

What I recommend instead

For a business that depends on local customers, I recommend a website on a platform you own and can move, most often WordPress or Shopify for e-commerce, built around the way your customers actually search. That means a fast, mobile-first design, a dedicated page for every core service and service area, clean technical SEO, proper schema, real tracking, and content written from your actual experience rather than a generic prompt. You can still use AI to speed things up. The difference is that the AI works for your strategy instead of replacing it.

If you are already on GoDaddy’s builder, you don’t need to panic or rebuild overnight. A planned migration that keeps your best content, maps every old URL to a new one with 301 redirects and preserves your Google Business Profile connection protects whatever rankings you have today.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoDaddy Airo bad for SEO?

It isn’t automatically penalized, but the proprietary builder limits the technical control, content depth and flexibility that competitive SEO usually requires. For businesses in competitive local markets, those limits add up.

Can I move my GoDaddy Airo website to WordPress?

Yes, but not automatically. GoDaddy’s Website Builder has no export tool, so the content has to be rebuilt on the new platform, ideally with redirects from every old URL.

Is Airo for WordPress the same thing?

No. Airo for WordPress builds on WordPress, which you can move and extend. It avoids the lock-in problem, though AI-generated content still needs a real strategy and human editing to rank well.

Who is Airo actually good for?

People who need a simple online presence quickly and don’t depend on search traffic for customers: a temporary event page, a personal project, or a placeholder while a proper site is built.
